'A Chef’s Life' host Vivian Howard is back with a new show 'Somewhere South,' focusing on the history and connections between Southern dishes and the ways people in different regions interpret them (Via EaterCarolinas)
Chefs Vivian Howard and BJ Dennis discuss the knowledge of growing rice brought to South Carolina by enslaved Africans.will be back on PBS screens tomorrow night, Friday, March 27, at 9 p.m. EST. Howard’s previous PBS endeavor was“I wanted to make this show because onwe told a more narrow story of the the landscape of Southern food,” Howard tells Eater.
She says, “No matter where we come from or what our backgrounds are, we bring our food traditions with us, which shapes where we land, but where we land also shapes our food traditions.” Each episode focuses on the connections between a dish and the ways different people interpret those dishes as well as exploring the histories and identities of the region. For example, the first episode explores hand pies, originally a lunch for coal miners, but can now be found in varying iterations, from applejacks to pepperoni rolls to empanadas., “The home kitchens I learn in, the stories I hear people share, the food I watch them make — it has lit a fresh fire under me.
