But the Tar Heels would have one more chance, and they would make the most of it. After inbounding the ball across midcourt, they called timeout with 1.2 seconds left and drew up a final play: a cross-court pass to Northwestern transfer Pete Nance, who got it off just before the whistle to send the game to overtime.
Sensabaugh finished with a team-high 22 points. Justice Sueing had 16 and a team-high nine rebounds, while Thornton scored 17 points. Armando Bacot led all scorers with 28 points and 15 rebounds. With Ohio State still ahead 68-58 with about six minutes to play, the Tar Heels threw a full-court press at the Ohio State
The Tar Heels would tie it at 72 on a Davis drive, and after Sueing drew a foul on a driving layup but missed the free throw, Davis' 3-pointer gave the Tar Heels the lead."We just made some poor decisions with the ball," Holtmann said."We’ll get better with that." Instead, Bacot got going and Sensabaugh helped. After the Love miss, Sensabaugh rushed a jumper of his own that didn’t fall, leading to a Bacot bucket with the Ohio State defense in scramble mode. It was his team’s first made field goal in nearly three minutes, and after Sensabaugh missed a quick 3-pointer in response he fouled a driving Bacot at the rim for a three-point play.
