Prime Minister Rishi Sunak said Boothroyd was a “remarkable woman”. His predecessor Sir Tony Blair said she was “big-hearted and kind”, while Sir John Major described her as “easy to like and easier still to admire”. Boothroyd was born to a working-class family in Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, and once described her political family as meaning she came “out of the womb into the Labour movement”.
