On an ordinary election day, the Australian high commissions in Hong Kong and Singapore would be teeming with expats casting their votes – they are two of the four busiest international polling booths in the world.

“We are an expat family living in Singapore and only found out [about the booth closing] due to a post on social media,” said Mel Purcell. She registered for a postal vote but, as of Thursday, had not received it. “The service is not gone, it’s just different,” he said, adding that frustration was understandable. “People are passionate about voting, the experience of voting, the Australian atmosphere, the democracy sausage. We get why people want that.”

Power moved to south-east Asia three years ago, just before the pandemic. While she and her husband were fortunate they did not have to miss funerals at home during that time, many of their friends did.
