ICYMI: No swimming allowed in the river, Saskatoon Fire Department warns in water safety message
“The river is a great way to stay cool, unfortunately there is a bylaw that does prohibit swimming in the river,” Saskatoon Fire Department deputy chief Rob Hogan told media gathered at River Landing Tuesday afternoon. He asked the public to exercise common sense.
Saskatoon Fire Department Deputy Fire Chief Rob Hogan. Firefighters with the department conducted a demonstration of their water rescue boat on the South Saskatchewan River on July 19, 2022. Over the weekend, members of the fire department’s water rescue team responded to a call after a group partying south of the Poplar Bluffs Conservation area noticed someone was missing. The group had been on a “party island” — a large inflatable float — on Saturday night.
Hogan said the fire department has a “robust” rescue team, but response outside of the city limits can be a struggle.
