Defence minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula has assured the public that they will not be abused by soldiers, who are due to be deployed to work with the police during the lockdown.
The minister was responding to questions over how members of the SANDF would treat citizens during the lockdown.
She also dismissed videos of soldiers ordering civilians to return to their homes that were doing the rounds on social media as fake news. Mapisa-Nqakula said there was a big difference between the deployment of the army under the terms of the National Disaster Management Act and section 37 of the constitution, which was a state of emergency.
