Tatjana Smith aiming to claim a unique slice of history when she lines up in the 100m breaststroke event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.Smith stands to become only the second swimmer in history after Penny Heyns in 1996 to complete the 100m and 200m breaststroke golden double at the same Olympics event. She wasn’t yet born when Heyns accomplished this historic feat.
30-year-old Akani Simbine has tied for fifth-fastest time this year, running 9.86 seconds two weeks before the Olympic Games. 21-year-old Benjamin Richardson and United States-based Shaun Maswanganyi will run with Simbine in the 4x100m event but the fourth member of what should be a formidable quartet is still unclear. Jamaican star Oblique Seville, who has a nod of approval from the iconic Usain Bolt, set the world’s fastest time of 2024, clocking 9.82 seconds in June.
