Tyler Murnaghan, executive director for Pride P.E.I., says until governments take action to curb hate and bigotry, political parties are no longer welcome at the annual Pride parade. Alison Jenkins • The GuardianCHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — When Green party candidate Joanna Morrison was out knocking on doors March 21, they were caught off guard by one person’s heartfelt endorsement.

Morrison was referring to comments captured on a recording of PC Leader Dennis King and an unknown constituent who was telling King trans people were “shoving it down everybody’s throats” and anyone who spoke up was called crazy.“In a perfect world, be happy with who you are or don’t be happy with who you are, you don’t gotta drive everything down everybody’s throat, and if they disagree, that’s fine.

“Because of … recent comments from those in leadership positions, we feel there is no other choice but to suspend the entry of all provincial political parties until commitments are made and followed up on with real, meaningful action once the legislature reconvenes following the election,” said the statement.

“With an election going on, with the premier’s comments coming out, there’s no better-fitting time to make such a statement. We hope that all candidates will stay true to the value of diversity and what it means to our province. We hope all people on the island can get behind that message and realize that this isn’t just an attack on one community, it’s an attack on diversity as a whole,” he said.

Individuals are welcome to march alongside other organizations, but political floats will not be registered.
