Russia's envoy to the U.S. said the downed drone was collecting intelligence to help Ukrainian forces target Moscow's troops.

The Russian envoy in Washington, D.C. has blamed the U.S. for the incident in which a MQ-9 Reaper drone crashed into the Black Sea after being harassed and rammed by Russian Su-27 fighter jets.

The Russian ambassador denied the U.S. report of the incident and claimed the drone was collecting intelligence to help Ukrainian units target Russian forces. The State Department summoned Ambassador Anatoly Antonov to explain the incident on Tuesday. Antonov later issued a communique condemning what he called"unacceptable actions of the United States military in the close proximity to our borders," according to Russia's state-run TASS news agency.
