The city of St. John’s has delivered its budget for 2023, and while the city is holding property taxes steady, residents will see increases in the water tax and recreation fees.
The cost of each individual increase varies, with some going up by as little as a dollar, while other areas will see some heftier price jumps. Council lead for Finance, Ron Ellsworth, says the city “cannot hold the line on inflation,” but they can use savings from previous years to help bridge them through this year’s expenses.
More jobs are being added at the city as well. Finance Lead Ron Ellsworth says maintaining current service levels, let alone enhancing them, has become challenging. As such, 21.24 new full time-equivalents will be added to address areas where pressure and demand are causing backlogs and delays.
