Algoma Steel's largest collective bargaining group has started voting on whether to strike for a better deal

Two thousand members of the largest bargaining group at Sault Ste. Marie's largest employer are deciding whether to strike after their contract expires at the end of the month.

Mike Da Prat, president of United Steelworkers Local 2251, told SooToday this morning that no last-minute overnight offer was received from the company, so members gathered today at GFL Memorial Gardens will take a strike vote.Other voting sessions will occur today after information meetings at 3:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Voting will continue on Thursday and Friday at the former Steel Hall at 68 Dennis St. from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m.Local 2251 is seeking wage hikes totalling 16 per cent over three years.
