“I don’t understand why the rest of us should feel like we need to buy expensive stuff for an unborn child, it feels somehow transactional. I had parents and my mother-in-law insist on helping us buy a few bits, and so I took them up on the offer. Women are good at finding all kinds of ways to show their friends they’re thinking of them. In the pandemic, five of my best friends got together on Zoom and caught up with our friend in a different city as she went on maternity leave, sending her body lotion and a blanket for the baby. We missed her, and hadn’t seen her in months. Some cultures believe present-buying for a baby before it’s safely in the world is a bad idea .
