After CBC News reported that emails from staff in Premier Danielle Smith’s office were sent to Crown prosecutors about the Coutts border blockade, a review turned up none, the government said Monday.
EDMONTON—The Alberta government says a search has found no emails between staff at the premier’s office and Crown prosecutors in the wake of a report that Danielle Smith’s office had “pushed back” against prosecutors’ descriptions of cases stemming from the border blockade in Coutts, Alta.
“An independent Crown prosecution service, free from political interference, is integral to the preservation of public confidence in the justice system,” Smith said. The CBC report did not reveal the specific details of the emails and stated in the story that it had not seen them. “Danielle Smith’s ‘internal review’ is a coverup,” NDP MLA Rakhi Pancholi said in a statement. “Wouldn’t you know it, the government announced today they didn’t find anything. This would be laughable if the matter wasn’t so very serious.”
Smith narrowly won the UCP leadership race after criticizing pandemic public health measures. She had said she’d look into a blanket amnesty for those charged with breaking COVID-19 rules.
