Three professional climbers killed in Banff National Park last week weren’t equipped with avalanche beacons during their descent of a remote peak off the Icefields Parkway when an avalanche came crashing down.
Brian Webster, visitor safety manager with Parks Canada, said it appears the climbers were swept off the mountain while rappelling down the face of ice and rock. While all three men were professional climbers, Webster said “there’s no amount of skill” that would have saved the men’s lives once the avalanche started. He called the mission a “recovery” and “not a rescue.”
During the search, Webster said spring avalanche conditions worsened, limiting search crews’ ability to search from the ground without triggering another slide. Rescuers were attached to long lines from the search helicopter in case they needed to make a quick exit.
