Despite inconsistent play in the second half, No. 4 Ohio State opened its Big Ten schedule with an 82-70 win over Rutgers.
, the teams' two matchups last season were decided by a combined 13 points.
A combination of a 7-of-14 start for Ohio State and a 3-of-14 start for Rutgers gave the Buckeyes a 20-6 lead after the first quarter. Their trademark full-court pressure was effective as the Scarlet Knights turned the ball over six times, and when they did get into their half-court offense, Ohio State regularly pushed the possessions deep into the shot clock, not allowing Rutgers to get the looks they wanted.
Rutgers, perhaps fueled by the emotion of the halftime ceremony dedicating the court to Stringer, didn't go down without a fight in the third quarter and cut the lead to single digits on two occasions. That's when the inconsistency crept in for the Buckeyes, as the Scarlet Knights found ways to break the press and drive to the basket.
