Wagner Group: No 10 under pressure to assist lawyers bringing terror charges against Russian paramilitariesIn a letter to Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Jason McCue, partner of McCue Jury and Partners, said there was a “crucial” need for the Wagner mercenaries to be designated as a terrorist group by the UK ‘as a matter of urgency
Last month, Mr McCue announced UK legal action against the Wagner Group and its founder Yevgeny Prigozhin, accusing, of “intentionally causing harm and suffering” to the people of Ukraine and causing “an illegal war through terrorism.” The court case is expected to be heard at the High Court in London.
“A combination of comprehensive designations and lawfare litigation will severely frustrate Wagner Group’s operations and deprive them of their assets and ability to function with impunity in the way that they are currently doing.”to the legal action being pursued in UK courts and offered to supply lawyers with vital information including the daily statistics of crimes against civilians by Russia’s war machine.
Jason McCue of McCue Jury and Partners received the full support of the Ukrainian government at a press conference in Kyiv, Ukraine and other conflicts overseas since its incorporation in 2014, inciting criticism from the international community. In November, the European Parliament adopted a resolution to recognise Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism, and other serious violations of international and humanitarian law amounting to acts of terror. The MEPs recognised Russia as a state that “uses means of terrorism”, and in mid-December the lower house of the Polish government recognised the Russian Federation as a state sponsor of terrorism.
Despite the sanctions, the UK government has not followed in the footsteps of its international partners and designated the private miliary group as a terrorist organisation.
