Former NHL player Adam Johnson is dead after his neck was cut by a skate in an on-ice collision during a game in Sheffield, England. The accident has some asking if neck guards should be mandatory.

At least that was the view of Northside Methodist Academy flag football coach Robby Morris and Emmanuel Christian counterpart Garrett Golden after their teams were eliminated from the postseason Class 1A-5A, Area 1-2 Qualifying Tournament Monday at Rip Hewes Stadium.

“Last year we won only a couple of games. We played eight games and won two,” Morris said. “This year, we played 11 games and won five of them and we didn’t just beat just one team. We beat three teams and were competitive against Booker T. , competitive against B.C. Rain and competitive against Dothan once.”

“There were a lot of firsts for us this year,” Golden said. “We didn’t score a touchdown last year and we scored this year. Obviously, we never participated in any area tournament because we are in our second year as an associated member. However, since this is not a sanctioned tournament, we were invited to play in the area, so first ever touchdown, first ever area tournament. Those are two cool things.

“Sydney obviously didn’t know she backed up in the end zone,” Morris said. “I told them it was my fault. I have to keep them aware of where they are.” The Knights seized the game’s opening lead late in the second quarter as Cool leapt over defenders to snag a 6-yard touchdown pass from Freeman. The conversion failed, leaving it 6-0 NMA with four minutes before the half. The Red Raiders took over from their own 15 with 49 seconds left after a 32-yard punt by Cool, who had three plus 30-yard punts in the game.
