Wayward mayor of the Nkomazi Local Municipality in Mpumalanga, Johan Mkhatshwa, is still in office and attending official functions, despite his dismissal from the ANC
.
Mkhatshwa was dismissed from the party for defying the decision of its national executive committee by accepting his nomination and election as mayor by ANC and EFF councillors when the Nkomazi council sat for the first time after the November 1 local government election. The NEC had preferred that Phindile Magagula take over as mayor after conducting interviews, but Mkhatshwa and a cabal of ANC councillors supported by the opposition ensured that he was elected for a second term on November 23.
Mpumalanga ANC provincial task team convener Mandla Ndlovu said that most of the wayward councillors had appealed their dismissal after their urgent application to the Johannesburg High Court to be reinstated was dismissed two weeks ago.If one appeals, it means the ANC’s processes aren’t exhausted. No member who’s appealed their dismissal can be removed from their position. The ANC’s internal processes grind slowly and we can’t just remove anyone.
