9 senators including Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Kamala Harris asked Jeff Bezos to explain why Amazon fired whistleblowers by AngelAuYeung
The company has said in statements that it fired these employees for violating internal communication policies as well as “bad actions, particularly those that endanger the health, wellbeing or safety of their colleagues.” The senators are challenging these explanations, categorizing the statements as “vague.”
The letter also claims that Amazon’s safety responses, which include closing warehouses for 48 hours for deep cleaning after employees test positive for the coronavirus and distributing more personal protective equipment to workers, “have not been sufficient.” The senators point to reports that show more than 100 Amazon warehouses have had coronavirus cases, and at least three deaths of employees, as proof of insufficient response.
The company said in statement that the workers were not fired for “talking publicly about working conditions or safety, but rather, for violating — often repeatedly — policies, such as intimidation, physical distancing and more.” The company also said it was looking “forward to explaining in more detail in our response to the senators’ letter.” nearly every day to keep the public aware of how it is ramping up its efforts to protect workers.
The nine senators who co-signed the letter with Warren, Sanders and Harris are Cory Booker , Sherrod Brown , Kirsten Gillibrand , Ed Markey , Richard Blumenthal and Tammy Baldwin .
