Cape Town has seen nine fatal drownings since the start of the season in September 2024, with four occurring in December. Despite the festive season ending, lifeguard services will continue in January with reduced services at certain beaches thereafter.

However, the youngest victim was just nine years old, marking a significant shift from the previous season when no fatalities involved individuals under 16.
City lifeguards have also intervened in over 30 serious non-fatal drownings requiring emergency care, including oxygen and hospitalisation.
