Nike has parted ways with Kyrie Irving, a Nike spokesperson told ShamsCharania Monday. The company previously suspended its relationship with Irving and said it wouldn't launch Irving’s Kyrie 8 sneakers after he endorsed a film with antisemitic views.
The Nets said in another statement when Irving was suspended that the organization “made repeated attempts to work with to help him understand the harm and danger of his words and actions, which began with him publicizing a film containing deeply disturbing antisemitic hate.”
On Nov. 4, Nike announced it was suspending its relationship with Irving, effective immediately. The company said, in part: “At Nike, we believe there is no place for hate speech and we condemn any form of antisemitism. We are deeply saddened and disappointed by the situation and its impact on everyone.”Irving is now a sneaker free agent. It seems like a confounding set of events for a player who is still among the’s very best and who once had his own popular shoe line.
In another time, with another NBA star of his caliber, sneaker companies might be in a bidding war for his services, but it will be interesting to see which company, if any, will want to sign Irving now. The economics of the shoe industry are changing and Irving brings controversy with him, so it remains to be seen what the future holds for Irving from this business perspective. —
