"For us in vast swathes of the Africa n continent, Mr Trump's guilty verdict is a daybreak on a new democratic promise," Mr Soyinka said.
In a seven-week-long historic trial, a New York jury on Thursday found Mr Trump guilty on all 34 counts he faced. The former Republican president, set to face off against Democratic incumbent Joe Biden in November's election, had pleaded not guilty. Reacting to the verdict, however, Mr Soyinka expressed the belief that"for millions in anguished parts of the world, certainly for us in vast swathes of the African continent, this is a daybreak on a new democratic promise."
