The first lady of Nigeria has cleared the air on misinterpreted reports claiming she criticised Meghan Markle's dressing.
The First Lady of Nigeria, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, has cleared the air on her remarks after her speech was misinterpreted as criticism of Meghan Markle’s outfit during her visit to the African country.Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, the first lady of Nigeria, delivered a speech to celebrate the first year of her husband, Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s, presidency. In the speech she discussed the challenges face by Nigeria’s youth.
“We are not having the Met Gala . . . We don’t accept nakedness in our culture,” First Lady Tinubu said in part during her speech, as per“It is not beautiful at all . . . They are mimicking and trying to emulate film stars from America. They don’t know where they come from. Why did Meghan come here, looking for Africa? That is something we have to take home with. We know who we are, and don’t lose who you are.
This led many to believe the comment about “nakedness” and dressing was aimed at Meghan. However, the first lady’s office cleared the air, following the speculation. The first lady’s office revealed that her reference to Meghan in the speech was about her journey to understand her identity. This was because Meghan had revealed that she was 43% Nigerian. So, this had nothing to do with the “nakedness” comment nor anything about the way the Duchess dresses.
“She meant Meghan appreciates the people we are and hence her coming here. At no point did she say anything about Meghan’s dressing,” the First Lady’s office said in a statement to“Your Imperial Majesty, Thank you for your warm welcome to Nigeria. I am deeply humbled by your blessing of the traditional Yoruba name, Adetokunbo.
