This particular lot was made in South Africa in 2021 and is set to expire this month, the regulator said, asking those in possession of the product to immediately discontinue sale or use.
Nigerian authorities have recalled a Johnson & Johnson children’s cough syrup after laboratory findings showed potentially deadly levels of toxicity.
The recall comes after mass deaths of children who consumed India-made cough syrup in Gambia and Uzbekistan in 2022. In those cases, the syrup medications were found to have been contaminated with two toxic chemicals, diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol. The regulator also warned people who have drunk the medication to watch out for abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state and signs of kidney injury.
