Thousands of Nigerian police officers are suing the Inspector-General of Police for refusing to promote them despite approval from the Police Service Commission.

The National Industrial Court in Abuja has scheduled March 6, 2025, for judgment in a case brought by 4,449 police officers against the Nigeria Police Force and the Inspector-General of Police. The officers filed the lawsuit alleging that the IGP has refused to promote them to their new ranks, despite being approved by the Police Service Commission. The plaintiffs' lawyer, Barr.

Muka'ila Yahaya Mavo, asserted that the Police Service Commission's authority over police promotions in Nigeria is unchangeable, as declared by the Supreme Court. He argued that the IGP can only overturn this power through constitutional amendment or changes to the Police Service Commission Act. According to Mavo, the IGP is bound by the law and must respect the commission's decision, which aligns with Section 6 of the Police Service Commission Act and Section 16 of the Police Act. The defense counsel, CSP Celestine U. Odo, countered that the promotion of officers remains at the discretion of the IGP. After extensive arguments, Justice R. B. Haastrup adjourned the case for judgment next year
