Frustrated by unmet needs, former Boko Haram fighters in Nigeria are threatening to resume their insurgency. The former Islamist insurgents accuse the Nigerian government of neglect since they surrendered.
fighters have warned that they could return to their previous terrorist activities as they complained of abandonment by the Nigerian authorities.Some told DW that they were better off fighting for the militant group than residing in camps.
But for over two years, only a few have benefited from what the government promised. There are over 100,000 repented "Anybody who is not willing to stay in the camp -- he wants to go to the bush -- allow him to go back to the bush." Major Muhammad Bashir Shu'aibu Galma told DW the threat of returning to the bush is dangerous for Nigeria and the entire Sahel region.
"They are more or less a time bomb now to society," Tahir said, adding that if the former militants return to the bush and continue the insurgency, it could be more dangerous.According to him, the fighters"have now gathered reasonable information and opportunity to attack people particularly the civilians."
