Former Conservative chancellor Nigel Lawson has died at the age of 91. Tributes have poured in from politicians with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak describing him as “an inspiration to me and many others”. GaryGibbonC4 reports.
Lawson was well known for the economic boom of the 1980s that would later define the Thatcher government. During his tenure, he cut income tax, pushed privatisation, and paid off government debt.
However, he didn’t always get along with Thatcher. He resigned in 1989 after rows over Europe and economic policy, and marked the start of her downfall a year later. Tributes have poured in from politicians, with Prime Minister Rishi Sunak describing him as “an inspiration to me and many others”.
