A former detective constable has told Sky News that questions have to be asked about how it was that Nicola Bulley ended up being discovered by members of the public despite the extensive police search.
She adds:"I think a lot of my concerns are that there has been a breakdown between the police and the public and when it did finally come it raised a feeling of concern with me that really it was a justification for why this woman had fallen in the river before anyone could actually confirm that she had."A statement from Nicola Bulley's family has been read out by DCS Pauline Stables. "We will never be able to comprehend what Nikki went through in her final moments.
The statement goes on to criticise the media, saying journalists had contacted the family yesterday when they had asked for privacy. Giving a statement outside police headquarters, Assistant Chief Constable Peter Lawson has confirmed Nicola Bulley's body was found in the river yesterday. He acknowledges it is"not the outcome we would have wanted" but thanks all those who have helped the investigation.
The force has already announced an internal review into the case, but when asked if there would be an external probe, Ms Braverman said"we need to let the police carry out and conclude their investigation". Peter Faulding was asked by Ms Bulley's family to help police in the search for the 45-year-old along the River Wyre.Although police are yet to formally identify a body found in the river on Sunday morning, Mr Faulding released a statement on Monday saying his thoughts"thoughts are with the family and friends of Nicola Bulley at this very difficult time".
