Nick Kyrgios through to the second round of US Open | smhsport
In a match with occasional fireworks and the ever-present capacity to explode, Nick Kyrgios managed to beat both himself and his American opponent Steve Johnson to advance past the US Open first round.
Playing his first match since an ugly on-court meldown at the Cincinatti Masters, where the Australian copped a $US113,000 fine – one of the biggest penalties in tennis history – Kyrgios took to challenging his entourage several times in an attempt to maintain his motivation levels in a match that began after 11pm local time.
On serve, Kyrgios stopped halfway through a ball toss as he was distracted by a spectator walking down the stairs. The Australian then turned his attention to the umpire and chastised him for focusing on Kyrgios and not the fan. Kyrgios double-faulted, before blasting a winner at 160 km/h and then ending the service game with an ace.
But the commotion appeared to annoy his opponent. "Stop f--ing around and let's play tennis," the American said as he crossed ends and walked past the umpire's chair.
