Bans on single-use vapes are in place in Australia and New Zealand, with the UK government also said to be considering a ban
Derry City and Strabane council backed the Sinn Fein motion calling for a total ban due to environmental and child health concerns.
While local councils in Northern Ireland do have some authority for issuing advice and enforcing age restrictions on tobacco products including cigarettes, Derry City and Strabane council would be unable to impose an outright ban on single-use vapes. An amendment, put forward by SDLP councillor Martin Reilly, called for "stricter regulations" instead but was voted down.
But a majority of councillors from several parties backed councillor Deeney's proposal calling for an outright ban on single-use vapes.
