The PM is expected to promise the cash to help address a record number of vacanciesin recent years. The proposals, which could be announced to coincide with the 75th anniversary of the NHS on 5 July, will allow tens of thousands of extra nurses, midwives, doctors and dentists to be trained over the next five years.
However, medics fear the plan, which covers a 15-year time period, will only succeed if it is fully funded, something the Treasury is understood to be resisting, instead agreeing only to spending commitments for certain aspects. Officials have raised concerns about committing billions to the plan beyond the next government spending review in 2025. Health Secretaryhas demanded that the NHS improve productivity and efficiency in return for the increase in its budget.
