The New Year surge in patients could stretch into February with 'knock-on effects for this summer and following winter,' according to the Doctors' Association

he said: “There are departments in this country where doctors and nurses have cleared cupboards out so they can see patients in a private area rather than the corridor.”

The NHS Confederation said the first week back after Christmas is traditionally the most challenging of the year for the NHS, and this year with a surge in flu and Covid-19 impacting staff and patients alike is likely to be even worse. “This is compounded by delays in discharging people when they’re ready to leave hospital, often because social care services are severely overstretched.”A leaked email shared withshowed that London Ambulance Service crews will only wait for 45 minutes at hospitals before handing over patients.

The letter states that ambulance crews will continue to look after unstable patients until a sucessful handover can be achieved. “The shame of it is that allowing us to perform the research would benefit patients so much more over the next decade. And because we’ve been failed on the frontline, it’s storing up all these problems for the future.”

Mr Barclay also said the Government is focused on freeing up hospital beds and creating more capacity as that will relieve pressures on A&E and will ensure ambulance handover times are reduced.
