When NHL free agency opens Saturday, it's possible some players return to the team they played for last year. It's happened 24 times in the last two decades. jprutherford spoke to four players about what the process is like.
When he left San Jose, there had been some discussion with then-general manager Doug Wilson about coming back. But there was no “deal in the drawer,” the phrase that’s been used over the years about players who agree to a contract with a club ahead of free agency, which, of course, is against NHL rules.
“It’s just comfortable,” he says. “You don’t have to worry about logistics — where’s the grocery store, where’s the kids’ school, how much time do I have to drop them off before I have to get back to the rink?
