HIV professionals battling to maintain services during the coronavirus pandemic have been adopting innovative methods.
And there were an estimated 1.5-million new infections and 680,000 Aids-related deaths in 2020, far higher than the UNAids goal to limit both to 500,000 per year.
Last year, HIV testing fell 22% in the more than 100 low- and middle-income countries where the organisation invests. At the same time, there was an 11% drop in the number of people reached by HIV prevention programmes.Resilience “We must come together now as a global community to ensure that the gains made in the past two decades are maintained, and that we reach more people with life-saving HIV prevention and treatment.”
In SA, where about 19% of people aged 15 to 49 have HIV, healthcare workers said efforts to piggyback off existing innovations, such as the minibus clinic, have helped them tackle obstacles caused by Covid-19.
