An NGO accuses the South African government of inaction and calls for immediate closure of unregistered spaza shops following the hospitalization of a child who consumed contaminated snacks.

Johannesburg - A Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) has accused politicians of reacting only when issues affecting South Africa ns become public spectacles. This criticism follows a recent visit by Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Velenkosini Hlabisa to an 8-year-old child from Soweto who has been in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of a hospital for almost a week after consuming snacks from a local tuck shop.

The incident sparked outcry and demands for action against the shop in question. The Forum for South Africa (FOSA) contends that the Government of National Unity (GNU) should be held legally accountable for allegedly permitting non-compliant spaza shops, small informal retail stores, to operate. FOSA asserts that it is unacceptable for ministers to neglect their duties and only take action when faced with legal challenges. The NGO criticizes the utilization of state resources and taxpayer money to defend inaction, arguing that this practice must cease. FOSA vehemently demands that the Minister of COGTA and the GNU government swiftly close all unregistered spaza shops. The organization has threatened legal action against these officials in their personal capacity if they fail to act decisively and address this matter of public health and safety. FOSA believes that this situation highlights a systemic problem of government neglect and calls for immediate and tangible action to protect the public
