The mushroom caps are working. Early results from using the protective Guardian Cap during the NFL preseason showed a reduction in concussions from 23 on average in the previous three years to 11 this year, per NFL executive vice president Jeff Miller.
preseason showed a reduction in concussions from 23 on average in the previous three years to 11 this year for the position groups that wore the device, Jeff Miller, an NFL executive vice president, told reporters Wednesday.
The data runs through training camp and up to the second week of preseason, and it was collected over the same time period in preseason as in previous years. The Guardian is a foam cap that wraps around the helmet. The league mandated offensive linemen, defensive linemen, tight ends and linebackers wear them during practice in an effort to reduce head injuries.“In short, the benefits of the Guardian Cap exceeded our expert expectations so far,” Miller said.
“Our engineers, epidemiologists are looking at video,” Miller said. “They’re looking at sensors to understand more about where the health savings were and why so that we can tailor our offerings for next season. There were some issues with the cap for sure around fitting and sizing and such. And we’ll work with the manufacturer to fix those in the offseason. But overall, it was a very positive story.
