Newsom, el presidente provisional del Senado, Mike McGuire, de Santa Rosa, y el presidente de la Asamblea, Robert Rivas, de Salinas, todos demócratas, señalaron hace dos semanas que planeaban dar este paso, pero continuaron negociando los detalles. Recientemente se eliminaron los recortes a los programas de vivienda y para personas sin hogar a los que se opusieron los demócratas de la Asamblea.
La estrategia enfrenta críticas de los republicanos, que la calificaron de “efectiva”, aunque no tienen los votos para bloquear el plan, que sólo requiere una mayoría simple.“Este acuerdo es un fracaso de los demócratas. El presupuesto de California tiene problemas importantes y Newsom está proponiendo soluciones conjuntas”, dijo en un comunicado el líder republicano de la Asamblea, James Gallagher de Chico.
También incluye lenguaje para congelar fondos únicos de años anteriores y un acuerdo para aprovechar la mitad de las reservas del estado en el próximo presupuesto.
