News stories about acts of kindness can positively affect mood, study found
A particularly wise fan reads sports coverage in Friday's Houston Chronicle newspaper while waiting in the stands for the start of Game 2 of the American League Division Series on Friday, Oct. 8, 2021, at Minute Maid Park in Houston.A stroll through the crime section — recounting stories of death, injury and violence — may leave a reader harboring feelings of anxiety or hopelessness, which is a key component of a study by associate professor Kathryn Buchanan at the University of Essex.
As part of a global trend, most news tends to focus on the bad things that are happening, and research has shown that consistently consuming this news may prove to be harmful to one’s mental health. It can lead to depression, anxiety, hopelessness and worry,These negative emotions can be counteracted though, by consuming positive news stories, Buchanan’s study found.
“We asked people to tell us how they felt mood-wise, both before and then immediately after viewing the news stories, and also to share with us their views about the state of humanity. Basically, what we found was that people who were sharing negative news stories followed by positive news stories fared way better than people that were simply sharing the negative news stories,” Buchanan said.
“So kind of shifted their perceptions of humanity away from this idea that actually we're going to hell in a handcart, and that there are good people out there doing good things,” she said.
