One man who spearheaded protests summed it up as follows: “Thank God she listened.”

Crab fisherman Jason Sullivan speaks to reporters during a protest by crab fishermen at the DFO building in St. John’s on March 22. Keith Gosse • The Telegram - Keith GosseThat was Jason Sullivan’s immediate reaction to the news that Fisheries and Oceans Minister Joyce Murray has decided to bump up the snow crab quotas for some inshore areas in Zone 3L.

Sullivan was working on his boat in Bay Bulls today when he got a call from the minister’s office, giving him a heads up about the announcement.Sullivan, who coaches his daughter’s hockey team, put it this way: “This week our hockey team won two silver medals. … But today I feel like I got the gold.”

Conception Bay, Area 6B, will get a 15 per cent bump and Bonavista Bay, Area 5A, was handed a 12 per cent increase. For him, the victory lies not just in getting a quota increase, but in the knowledge that the inshore fishers of Zone 3L were able to make the minister understand the issue and the need for changes.“In fairness to the minister,” he added, “she wasn’t aware of the whole story. He said he hopes it’s a sign that the minister will be willing to consider other issues highlighted by harvesters around the province and be willing to initiate change.
