It brings back a vivid memory for me almost 25 years to the day, on 24 July 1999 I was down at Reading for a pre-season friendly,I can remember it was very hot that day and pretty sure that both Gullit and Clarke played at least a full half, if not more. It wasn’t a token five minutes. I also recall Ruud Gullit was excellent, think he played middle of the defence, Steve Clarke probably/possibly in central defence with him. Just checked their ages and at the time Gullit was 36 and Clarke 35, so maybe no surprise that both could put on a decent show.I limited myself to those who have managed Newcastle United in the last 40 years and I wondered just how good a team it would produce, these Newcastle United managers judging them on ability in their best playing era.
