After the bitter Carabao Cup defeat and some unnecessary gripes from Erik ten Hag, Newcastle sealed sweet revenge in what could be the high water-mark of Eddie Howe's tenure so far
. But for all the talk of blue chip signings and swollen transfer fees, Howe’s biggest achievement is the improvement he has inspired in the likes of Jacob Murphy, Longstaff and Dan Burn, who snuffed out the threat of Antony so well. Few other teams battling for the top four would find room for those players but they form part of an outstanding collective.
For Ten Hag, it was another one of those days, which are occurring with alarming frequency of late. His team were hailed as results monsters by Jürgen Klopp a few weeks ago and it was meant as a backhanded compliment for a side capable of churning out wins without playing particularly well. Since then the goals and wins have started to dry up and what’s left isn’t especially pretty.
Perhaps that is it, or maybe they’re just not particularly good when the peerless Casemiro is ripped out of their midfield. His replacement is Marcel Sabitzer, who wouldn’t get in Newcastle’s side. And the less said about Wout Weghorst, who increasingly looks like a Ten Hag blind spot, the better. Perhaps he does an important job pressing, but he offered absolutely zero threat as Newcastle’s centre-backs, Fabian Schär and Sven Botman, breezed through their afternoon. Marcus Rashford might have offered a few moments of discomfort had he not spent most of the game complaining about some fairly marginal calls.
Ten Hag has won plaudits for his management but resorted to taking off his two centre-halves in an attempt to wrest momentum back. “A mess,” Gary Neville called it. How Newcastle revelled in the chaos they had created.
