Kia Ora Vancouver will hold a remembrance ceremony at Sunset Beach on Thursday evening.
New Zealanders and supporters will gather in Vancouver Thursday evening to remember the victims of the mosque massacre in Christchurch. The event is being organized by the New Zealand group Kia Ora Vancouver. The group says the remembrance gathering will be a place to “share, console, talk, hug and feel supported” by fellow New Zealanders and their friends.
The group plans to sing traditional New Zealand songs and illuminate the park with glow sticks in memory of the victims, their families and all the New Zealanders involved. The event is open to all who wish to join in the vigil. Kia Ora is reminding people that candles are not permitted in the park, and is asking that attendees bring torches or glow sticks instead.
Fifty people were killed and scores more injured last week in New Zealand’s worst mass shooting at two mosques. On Thursday, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinta Ardern announced a ban of military-style semi-automatic firearms and high-capacity magazines like those used in the shootings.
