New Yorkers are increasingly avoiding mass transit, the 'nexus of human density'
First came the face masks and latex gloves. Then came what is normally that rarest of commodities — space on a rush-hour train.
Given the known contours of the disease, the World Health Organization’s declaration of a coronavirus "pandemic" and the growing virality of terms like “social distancing,” these rough estimates may well be understating the phenomenon of mass transit aversion. “We have been for some time looking at innovative ways to disinfect the rolling stock, buses, stations,” Foye said. “And we are making progress on that … I think we’ll have more to say about that in the days ahead.”
“Today, I took the railroad to Woodside and took the 7 train to Grand Central and then took the 4 uptown, I had a breakfast,” Foye said. “And then I took the 4 or 5, I forget which, downtown to the office.” His staff of 10 is made up of largely young, healthy people, but he doesn’t want anyone carrying the virus to their more vulnerable loved ones.
On the same day, the state comptroller painted an undeniably grim portrait of the MTA’s finances. Reinvent Albany’s Rachael Fauss warned of Covid-19’s “potentially huge consequences on their budget going forward.”
