New York state is set to enact the most ambitious greenhouse gas emissions reduction mandate in the country

ALBANY — , charting a course to reach net zero emissions by 2050.

It’s not clear when lawmakers will take up the final bill, which had not been posted as of Monday evening. The session is scheduled to end on Wednesday. “Overall, this bill is a big victory for our planet, our state, and our communities,” said New York Renews communications coordinator Arielle Swernoff in a statement. “It’s not perfect, but this is only the beginning. As a coalition, NY Renews will continue to fight for the interrelated goals of racial, economic and environmental justice.”

Limited offsets for the emissions remaining in 2050 would be allowed under the measure. That could include natural carbon sinks like wetlands or forest restoration projects or carbon capture and sequestration. He also raised concerns about costs and regulatory uncertainty because of the lengthy timeline of implementing plans for achieving the mandates.
