During his draft year while playing for the Windsor Spitfires of the Ontario Hockey League, he registered 38 goals and 85 assists; he was second among the team in points trailing only Dallas Stars rookie Wyatt Johnston.
Last season, he notched an impressive 54 goals and 57 assists for 111 points in 66 games. He won the OHL’s Eddie Powers Trophy for producing the most points among OHL skaters. He also led the entire OHL in goals and was awarded the Jim Mahon Memorial Trophy as the right winger who scored the most points in the regular season.
