The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation opened an investigation into the death of two people in an incident with a deputy.
Police tape is shown at the scene of an officer-involved-shooting in Dewitt, N.Y., on Sept. 6, 2023.
Once the deputy arrived on the scene and discovered the two vehicles, one of them fled, the attorney general's office said. One person was pronounced dead on the scene, while the other individual was sent to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to the New York State Attorney General's Office.
The sheriff's deputy was wearing a body camera but it wasn't turned on, Shelley said, adding that the deputy did not have time to turn on the device.
