The fine can reach up to R1,500 for violations like permitting minors to handle fireworks, failing to obtain necessary permits, and disregarding safety guidelines.

The Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) has warned residents that they could receive a hefty fine of up to R1,500 for not using fireworks responsibly. With the end of 2024 just days away, many are preparing in various ways how to end the year with a bang. Fireworks, of course, are always part of those celebrations in different locations all around the world. But at times, excitement can lead to irresponsible use.

The JMPD issued a statement on 27 December to the public to avoid doing certain things when busting fireworks during end-of-year celebrations. The set fine is between R1,000 and R1,500. You could be fined either amounts if you do any of the things listed below. Permitting or allowing minors to light or ignite them. Failing to obtain permission for fireworks display and to comply with the terms and conditions of display permission. Failing to ensure that fireworks displays be presented only on suitable premises designated by the Council. Also, this should be under the supervision and control of an official designated by the Council. Failing to ensure that the fireworks license in terms of the Explosives Act and a written authority of the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Executive Head is in hand when dealing in them. Failing to ensure that a written authority to deal with fireworks from the Executive Head is not contravened. The JMPD provided a comprehensive list of places where the public can use fireworks and the proper times to do it. People are allowed to use them on certain days during the year.
