New data reveals that New Year's Eve is the most popular day for UK workers to take a break, surpassing even Christmas Eve. The report also highlights trends in leave requests throughout the year, showing a preference for Fridays and Mondays and a lull in January.

As the festive season approaches and 2023 comes to a close, most UK workers have probably already booked their annual leave . Surprisingly, New Year's Eve is the most popular day for a short break, according to new data. December 31st outpaces other days, with Boxing Day in second place, while Christmas Eve ranks fifth, trailing behind August 23rd and 26th.

This information comes from Employment Hero's SmartMatch Report, which analyzes real-time employee data from small and medium-sized UK businesses. Kevin Fitzgerald, Managing Director of Employment Hero UK, said: 'It's no surprise that New Year's Eve tops the leave list - who wouldn't want to get ready to celebrate the new year with friends and family? At the same time, let's recognize the incredible work of hospitality workers, healthcare professionals, and emergency responders who keep things running while the rest of us celebrate.' Interestingly, all these peak dates fall on weekdays, two of which are bank holidays, often treated as regular annual leave by some companies. However, when looking at early January, it emerges as the least popular time for taking time off. Throughout the year, Fridays and Mondays are the most sought-after leave days, while Wednesdays see fewer requests from employees eager for a holiday. Fitzgerald commented: 'Our data shows that UK workers like to 'leave hack' by combining annual leave with bank holidays for longer breaks. It also highlights that January is a quieter period for leave - ideal for employers to focus on getting things done while the team is fully present. Recognizing these trends helps businesses plan better for the year ahead.
