New Texas State coach G.J. Kinne will remain with UIW through FCS playoff run
UIW football coach G.J. Kinne talks Thursday morning, Sept. 15, 2022, to the team at the end of practice as they prepare for their Saturday matchup against Prairie View A&M.G.J. Kinne will be leaving UIW to become the next head coach at Texas State, but not before leading the Cardinals through the FCS playoffs, the programs announced Friday.
“We would like to take this time to thank Coach Kinne for leading one of the most successful seasons in Cardinal football history... a season that is far from over for Coach Kinne and our UIW student-athletes,” the school said in a statement. “Kinne will continue to lead the team as the UIW Cardinals look to advance in the FCS playoffs and chase a National Championship.”
Kinne took the reins in December, arriving in San Antonio following one season as the offensive coordinator at UCF and a year as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Hawaii. Kinne played his final high school season at Gilmer under current UTSA head coach Jeff Traylor, and the two reunited on the staffs at SMU and Arkansas in 2017 and 2018. They will now face off annually as rivals, with UTSA and Texas State set to play nonconference games each year through 2031.
