Will 200 megapixels offer a real improvement?
As usual, Samsung’s ultra-high-resolution camera is unlikely to produce massive 200-megapixel images in general use. The increased pixel count will instead form the basis for the next iteration of, which can deliver several benefits beyond simply increasing image sharpness. It’s through these technologies that Samsung aims to improve image quality, even at standard resolutions of 12 megapixels, by increasing capabilities such as dynamic range.
On the other hand, cutting-edge high-megapixel sensors have a history of causing significant problems for Samsung smartphones at launch, some of which have been difficult to fix . It’s likely, therefore, that a step up to 200 megapixels will bring with it a few teething problems. We won’t know until Samsung’s new camera is available in significant numbers but, for now, all eyes are on the Galaxy S23 Ultra which is expected to launch around February 2023.
